Arthur Fils eyes Grand Slam breakthrough after Cincinnati
Arthur Fils can move close to the Top 10 after Cincinnati as his strong season raises French Grand Slam hopes.
Arthur Fils has strengthened his status as France’s leading hope for a major title before Sunday’s Cincinnati final. A victory would give the 22-year-old another significant milestone and put him close to the world’s top 10 when the next rankings are published on Monday.
Fils will face American Frances Tiafoe at 22:30 French time. The result could make him the first Frenchman since Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Toronto in 2014 to win a Masters 1000 tournament. He has also become the first player from France since Guy Forget in 1991 to reach three Masters 1000 semi-finals in one season.
His 2025 campaign already includes the ATP 500 title in Barcelona and semi-final appearances in Miami and Madrid. That form places him among the outsiders for the US Open, which begins on 30 August, behind the leading names Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev.
Benoît Maylin has identified Fils as the French player most capable of winning a Grand Slam, while also arguing that his remaining weaknesses make an immediate triumph unlikely. Fils’ progress has therefore shifted the discussion from potential to timing: his level is already high, but a major breakthrough may still require another year or two.
