Ligue 1: Luis Enrique leads PSG tribute to Brest coach Éric Roy

Paris Saint-Germain’s visit to Brest on Sunday will carry an importance beyond the Ligue 1 table. The match at Stade Francis-Le Blé, scheduled for 20:45, will close the fourth round of the season and provide the setting for a tribute to Éric Roy, Brest’s former coach who died on June 17 at the age of 58.

Luis Enrique addressed Roy’s death at his pre-match press conference. Roy will not be present at Francis-Le Blé, but Luis Enrique said he would remain in the thoughts of those involved. “He will not be there, but he will be with us, in our minds,” he said. “I hope it will be a special day.” The tribute will therefore be part of the match itself, rather than a separate remembrance removed from the football.

Brest have organised a ceremony in Roy’s memory, with his wife, Lœtitia Roy, expected to attend. The stadium’s kop will also be open for the occasion. That stand had been closed during Brest’s first home match, making its return another notable part of the evening planned by the club and its supporters.

Luis Enrique also acknowledged the pain attached to the occasion while insisting that football must continue. “He will be missed. That is life, we have to continue,” he said. He added that Roy would, in his view, have been very happy to see the tribute. The comments placed the evening between mourning and the normal demands of a league fixture.

Roy had coached Brest since 2023 and made an immediate impact. At the end of his first season in charge, he guided the club to qualification for the Champions League. That achievement gave Brest a historic sporting milestone and helped establish Roy’s importance to the recent identity of the club before his death.

His illness had been known for three years. Roy had been suffering from pancreatic cancer, and the news of his death prompted a broad reaction across football.
