Rayan Cherki faces France tension with Michael Olise
Rayan Cherki’s relationship with Michael Olise is under scrutiny as France coach Zinedine Zidane builds his team.
Rayan Cherki’s place in France’s emerging core is facing an internal challenge after Michael Olise showed little tolerance for some of his Manchester City team-mate’s behaviour. The tension could complicate Zinedine Zidane’s plans, with both players viewed as important figures for the national team’s long-term project.
France will close this extended international window against Belgium on Monday at 20:45, their fourth and final match of the break. The national team beat Belgium 1-0 last week, while Olise strengthened his standing during the camp. Cherki, however, has not made the same impression after being used in a deeper role than his usual attacking-midfield position.
Olise is described as a quiet player who leads through his actions rather than constant talking. His expectations on the pitch are firm, and he has struggled to understand Cherki’s more playful and unconventional approach, particularly during training. The difference is less about their positions than their contrasting attitudes to preparation and the demands of the game.
Cherki, 23, is now at Manchester City after joining from Lyon in the 2025-26 season. He represents both France and Algeria, but remains part of Zidane’s plans with the French squad. Olise, who is close to Kylian Mbappe, has emerged as one of France’s leading figures during the break, increasing the attention on how the two players will work together.
