Saly Sarr makes Senegalese Diamond League history

Saly Sarr has delivered Senegal’s first Diamond League title, becoming the country’s first athlete, male or female, to win the competition. The triple jumper claimed the women’s final in Brussels and added a landmark achievement to her rise among the leading specialists in the event.

Sarr’s winning effort measured 14.96 metres. Cuba’s Leyanis Pérez Hernández finished second at 14.82m, while compatriot Davisleydis Velazco took third with 14.73m. Sarr also produced marks of 14.95m on her second attempt and 14.69m on her fourth, with her best jump aided by a 0.3 metres-per-second wind.

The result extends a strong season for the reigning African champion. She won in Silesia on 23 August, where she set a Senegalese national record, after placing second in Monaco with 14.99m in July. Earlier podium finishes included 14.86m in Doha and 14.75m in Oslo. She also won an indoor world bronze medal at the most recent World Championships.

The Brussels victory confirms Sarr’s consistency across the Diamond League circuit and gives Senegal its first title in the series. It also represents another step in the 23-year-old Dakar-born athlete’s progression after her previous podium results and national-record performance.
