Senegal and Gambia contest U17 group lead in Thiès

Senegal and Gambia have reached the UFOA/A U17 semi-finals, with their derby deciding the Group A leader.

Senegal and Gambia will meet in the final Group A fixture of the UFOA/A U17 tournament with qualification for the semi-finals already secured. Their derby in Thiès will instead decide which side finishes top of the section, giving both teams a final opportunity to establish an advantage before the knockout round.

The match is scheduled for Sunday at 16:00 at the Lat Dior Stadium. Each team has collected six points from two victories. Senegal opened with a 4-0 win over Mauritania and followed it with a 5-0 success against Sierra Leone. Gambia began by defeating Sierra Leone 4-1, then beat Mauritania 3-1.

Senegal arrive with the stronger defensive and attacking record. The Lionceaux have scored nine goals without conceding, while Gambia have found the net seven times and allowed two. Senegal’s first victory included two goals from Cheikh Oumar Sy, alongside strikes by Souleymane Commissaire Faye and Amadou Ndiaye. Sy scored twice again against Sierra Leone, with further goals from Faye, Amadou Assane Seck and Serigne Aliou Diop.

The result will settle the order at the top of Group A, while the teams’ unbeaten starts have already confirmed their progress. Senegal will have home conditions in Thiès, but Gambia enter the contest with the same points total and two wins. The group’s other match, Mauritania against Sierra Leone, is also set for 16:00 at Dakar’s Djagaly Bagayoko Stadium.
