Senegal Lions turn to February 2027 World Cup window
Senegal lead Group F after two wins and now focus on February’s decisive World Cup qualifying window.
Senegal’s basketball team has shifted its attention to the February 2027 window, which will decide whether the Lions reach the World Cup. The team needs to maintain its progress across three remaining games as it targets a sixth appearance at the tournament.
Senegal finished the latest qualifying window with two victories from three matches and sits first in Group F on 16 points. Sunday’s 97-71 win over Mali at Dakar Arena secured the strong finish, after the Lions had opened the window with a 61-76 defeat by Egypt.
Pape Moustapha Diop said the squad must continue working seriously, pointing to the effectiveness of its transition play against Mali. He stressed that the qualification campaign remains unfinished and that every February fixture will carry weight. Ibrahima Badji, meanwhile, admitted that he was dissatisfied with his individual display during the window, although he valued the two wins that followed the Egypt loss.
Mouhamed Faye did not play during the window but highlighted the team’s concentration and adherence to the coaching staff’s instructions. The pivot, one of several newer members of the squad, said he would have preferred playing time while praising the contribution of those selected. The Lions will return in February seeking the results needed to complete qualification.
