Springboks answer All Blacks to level Test series

South Africa have restored balance in the four-Test series against New Zealand, responding to their opening defeat with a win in Cape Town. The result puts the reigning double world champions level with the All Blacks at one victory apiece, with the third match scheduled for next weekend at Johannesburg’s FNB Stadium.

The Springboks prevailed 33-26 after building an early advantage. Jesse Kriel crossed inside two minutes, and Cheslin Kolbe’s penalty restored their lead after Cam Roigard had brought New Zealand level. Damien de Allende then added South Africa’s second try before Damian McKenzie narrowed the gap. Siya Kolisi’s try shortly before half-time gave the hosts a 10-point cushion.

New Zealand’s discipline continued to cost them after the interval, allowing Kolbe to land two penalties in quick succession. Leroy Carter’s try kept the All Blacks in contention, but another Kolbe penalty left them 14 points behind with eight minutes remaining. Ardie Savea scored in the 76th minute to reduce the deficit to seven, yet South Africa held on despite Lood de Jager receiving a late yellow card. The Springboks had been beaten at Ellis Park in the series opener, but this performance ensured the contest moved on level.
