Terence Atmane camp explains Jingshan withdrawal
Terence Atmane's team says medical tests have not identified why he abandoned in Jingshan.
Terence Atmane’s family has offered an explanation for his sudden retirement at the Jingshan Challenger, but the medical cause remains unresolved. The French player faced criticism after leaving the match without an obvious sign of distress and without speaking publicly about the decision.
Atmane, ranked 99th in the world, stopped against Sweden’s Elias Ymer, ranked 192nd, with the third set tied at 5-5 and Ymer leading 40-15. The official tournament record listed a leg problem. Atmane had gone to the net to shake hands despite appearing not to be in clear discomfort.
Medical examinations carried out after the US Open identified food allergies to eggs and pineapple, as well as an unusually high CPK level. That enzyme reading could be linked to his muscles deteriorating more quickly during prolonged exertion. His father said roughly 80% of the requested tests had been completed, with possibilities still including a muscular illness, a vein disorder, kidney trouble or severe fatigue after a difficult season.
The 24-year-old has played 38 matches this year and won 16. He is due to begin qualifying for the Shanghai Masters on Monday, three years after reaching the second round there from qualifying while ranked 148th. His family will monitor whether extended play again brings physical problems.
