Anthony Gordon takes a bigger role at Barcelona and England

Anthony Gordon has started strongly for Barcelona and England, with goals and assists lifting his standing.

Anthony Gordon has quickly moved from a questioned signing to an important figure for both Barcelona and England. The left winger is now established in Hansi Flick’s plans at club level and has also become a regular starter for Thomas Tuchel’s national team. His pace and pressing were expected to suit Barcelona, but his early influence has gone beyond those qualities.

Gordon has supplied four assists in six La Liga appearances, operating as Barcelona’s first-choice option on the left. He has also started all three of England’s matches under Tuchel, scoring in each one and adding an assist against Croatia. England’s 7-0 victory in that match underlined his current form, with Gordon among the players making the strongest claim for a central role in the team.

The €80 million move from Newcastle had raised doubts among Barcelona supporters, both because of the fee and because of questions over whether Gordon’s profile fitted the club. Those concerns have eased as he has built an understanding with his new teammates and adapted to Flick’s pressing game. Karim Adeyemi remains competition for his position, but Gordon’s contribution has given Barcelona an immediate return on the investment.

His progress has also changed the way he is viewed in England. Gordon has previously felt that his speed and defensive work were valued more than his technical ability and football intelligence. His goals, assists and increased confidence now point to a player operating at a higher level for club and country.
