Yann Diomandé backs coach after failed Cameroon experiment
Yann Diomandé accepted the coach’s tactical gamble after Ivory Coast’s friendly against Cameroon failed to produce the desired result.
Yann Diomandé has defended the authority of Ivory Coast coach Hervé Renard after a tactical experiment against Cameroon failed to deliver the intended outcome. The Real Madrid winger said the decision belonged to the coach, while acknowledging that the changes did not work. He also stressed that the team’s priority remained collective rather than individual.
Diomandé began Saturday evening’s friendly on the bench and entered in the 61st minute. Cameroon’s defence immediately concentrated on Ivory Coast’s left side, limiting the space available to the young winger. A Diomandé effort was also redirected away from goal by Simon.
Renard had made major changes to the starting team that featured in both of Ivory Coast’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches. Diomandé said experimentation was part of the coach’s role, but added that the fixture carried particular importance for the players because Cameroon and Ivory Coast share a strong derby rivalry. Despite its friendly status, he said the Ivorians wanted victory.
The match was another test for Diomandé after his high-profile move to Real Madrid during the latest transfer window. The Ivorian winger became one of the world’s most expensive players, but his introduction from the bench showed that his status at club level does not guarantee a starting place with the national team.
