Arthur Fils admits major collapse after US Open exit

Arthur Fils took full responsibility after losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the US Open first round.

Arthur Fils has accepted full responsibility for a first-round US Open exit that ended his strong North American summer. The French number one described his performance as a serious failure in match management, rather than blaming the demanding schedule or his opponent.

Fils lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas 4-6, 7-6, 6-1, 6-4 in New York, only eight days after winning the biggest title of his young career in Cincinnati. He had entered the tournament with growing expectations, but his campaign ended after four sets and a sharp decline from the level that brought him the Ohio trophy.

The turning point came after he dropped the second-set tiebreak. Fils said he became frustrated, lost his tactical direction and was unable to remain competitive during a difficult spell. He also acknowledged that even on a poor day, a player with his ambitions must find ways to stay in the match or win it.

The defeat therefore represents more than an early Grand Slam elimination for Fils. It exposed the mental and tactical gap he still believes separates him from the leading players. His own assessment was unusually severe, but it also made clear that he saw the loss as a lesson to absorb rather than a setback to explain away.
