The potential risk for France is not the Ballon d’Or debate itself but the way personal status can be interpreted inside a national team. Mbappé’s goals and performances have so far prevented resentment from becoming a visible problem, and the pair previously shared the France environment without difficulty during the last World Cup despite speculation that Dembélé’s standing in the award race could create rivalry.
