Christophe Dugarry dismisses Mbappé-Dembélé rift

Christophe Dugarry has rejected the idea that the Mbappé-Dembélé dispute has divided France, describing it instead as a conflict between two contrasting approaches to football. He also argued that Kylian Mbappé had not attacked Ousmane Dembélé through his comments about his own status.

The controversy followed Mbappé presenting himself as a player long identified for the highest individual honours. His entourage reportedly took issue with that portrayal, while Dugarry questioned why Dembélé would feel offended. He noted that Dembélé has won two Champions League titles and a Ballon d’Or, and said the pair have known each other since they were 15.

Speaking on RMC Sport’s Rothen s’enflamme, Dugarry pushed back against Jérôme Rothen’s suggestion that Mbappé’s remarks amounted to betrayal and that the France squad had split into two camps. He called for specific names rather than speculation and dismissed the idea of an established division within the team.

Dugarry portrayed Dembélé as reserved, collective-minded and deliberately distant from celebrity, while casting Mbappé as more individualistic and comfortable in the spotlight. He admitted that Mbappé’s frequent use of the first person had made him uncomfortable, but said that self-confidence was also part of the forward’s character. For Dugarry, any friendship between the two should be strong enough to withstand the disagreement.
