Derek Cornelius draws Monza interest as Sassuolo steps back

Marseille now have another possible route to move Derek Cornelius on, with Monza joining the Serie A clubs monitoring the Canada and Jamaica international. The interest remains preliminary, but it gives OM an additional option as the club continues to consider an exit for the centre-back.

Cornelius, 28, arrived at Marseille from Malmö for €4 million in 2024/25 after previously playing for Vancouver. He was brought in to strengthen the defence but has not completely convinced since joining the French club. Marseille therefore remain open to his departure, with a loan including a purchase option still viewed as a preferred solution.

Sassuolo had examined the defender’s profile and made enquiries, but the Italian club has now moved towards other defensive targets. Lecce continue to follow Cornelius, although their attention is currently focused on prospective deals for Ivan Ilic and Ali Dembélé from Torino.

Monza are the newest club in the picture. Back in Serie A this season, they are coached by Ivan Juric, whose contract runs until 2028. After losing to Inter on the opening matchday, Juric has sought another addition in each line, including at centre-back. No advanced talks with Marseille have begun, leaving the player’s next move unresolved.
