Cristiano Ronaldo exit could devalue Portugal brand

Cristiano Ronaldo’s possible Portugal retirement threatens the federation’s commercial value despite strong results without him.

Portugal’s football federation could suffer a major commercial setback if Cristiano Ronaldo ends his international career. The 41-year-old forward left the national team camp after a dispute involving coach Jorge Jesus and has not confirmed whether he will return. Any departure would remove the country’s most recognisable football figure from its sporting brand.

Ronaldo was replaced by Gonçalo Ramos during the Nations League meeting with Wales and had earlier been left out of the starting side against Norway. Portugal won both matches, beating Wales 1-0 and Norway 2-1, then defeated Denmark 4-2 without him. The results show that the team can continue competitively, but they do not erase his commercial importance. Portugal’s leading scorer and most-capped player has made 234 appearances and scored 146 goals for the national side.

Global interest in the federation could fall across merchandise, ticket sales and sponsorship. Searches for “Portugal CR7” rose 467% worldwide in the 24 hours after his departure, while searches for Ronaldo shirts increased by 185%. Rafael Leão has already worn the number seven against Denmark under Nations League rules, but Ronaldo remains the focus of public attention. Sponsors could reassess agreements built around his presence, while international interest in Portugal may decline even if domestic support grows. The financial impact remains conditional on Ronaldo formally announcing his retirement.
