Diambars eliminated from CAF Confederation Cup

Diambars have been eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup in the first preliminary round, ending their campaign despite winning the return match at home. The Senegalese club could not recover from the deficit carried over from the opening leg and will not reach the next stage.

Diambars defeated ES Zarzis 1-0 on Saturday at the Léopold Sédar Senghor Stadium, but Zarzis advanced 3-2 on aggregate after taking the first match 3-1. Mendy scored the only goal of the second leg by converting a penalty in the 40th minute, leaving Diambars needing one more goal to level the tie.

The hosts had begun with authority and continued to create opportunities after the break, but rushed decisions and poor finishing prevented them from adding to their lead. The first-leg defeat had also included a disputed penalty for Zarzis and the sending-off of Mouhamed Diagne, which left Diambars playing with 10 men late in that match. The missed chances across the two games now leave Assane Faye’s team with regrets over a tie that appeared within reach.

Senegal still has one club in the continental competitions. Teungueth FC holds a 1-0 advantage over Canchungo in the Champions League and is scheduled to play the return leg at the same Dakar stadium on Sunday at 17:00.
