Diane Parry exits US Open after second-round defeat

Diane Parry's US Open run ends in the second round after defeat by Sorana Cirstea in straight sets.

Diane Parry’s US Open campaign is over in the second round, ending the Frenchwoman’s bid to reach the tournament’s second week. The result stops the momentum she built by winning her first WTA main-tour title in Monterrey and leaves her short of a repeat of her run to the second week at this year’s French Open.

Parry lost 6-2, 7-5 to Romania’s Sorana Cirstea in a match lasting one hour and 51 minutes. The 24-year-old had nine wins in her previous 10 matches, but struggled to maintain her level in New York. She landed 55% of her first serves and made 33 unforced errors while facing the 36-year-old Cirstea, who has said she will retire at the end of the season.

The French number one showed resistance in the second set after falling behind with an early break. She recovered the break and saved two match points at 5-4, but Cirstea broke again immediately afterwards to close out the match. Parry was playing her seventh match in nine days, a demanding stretch after her Monterrey title and her opening-round victory over Viktorija Golubic, 7-5, 6-4.

Parry’s departure leaves Leolia Jeanjean as the only Frenchwoman remaining in the singles draw. Jeanjean will face Austria’s Anastasia Potapova in the second round.
