Dino Toppmöller clashes with Lens dressing-room leaders

RC Lens’ coaching situation has become unstable, with Dino Toppmöller appearing close to an early departure after tensions with senior members of the squad intensified. The German coach was appointed in the summer to replace Pierre Sage, but his spell could end after only seven competitive matches.

Toppmöller’s record has been uneven. Lens beat Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 to win the Trophée des Champions and later defeated Slavia Prague 3-2, but those results have not offset concerns about the team’s performances. Injuries have reduced his options, while several summer arrivals have yet to settle into the side.

The main breakdown has been inside the dressing room. Doubts over the coach’s tactical approach and his selection decisions had already emerged among the squad’s senior figures by the end of August. The lack of convincing performances and results added to the strain, before discussions between the coach and key players became more heated in recent hours.

The club’s next decision is expected before Friday’s demanding trip to Monaco, who sit second in Ligue 1 behind Lille. A press conference had been scheduled at La Gaillette on Wednesday at 1:15 p.m. Yannick Cahuzac is considered a possible future first-team coach, although Lens would face substantial financial consequences if Toppmöller and his staff were dismissed after signing two-year agreements. Cahuzac’s lack of required diplomas could also bring a €25,000 fine per match.
