Dino Toppmöller’s Lens exit shocks Germany

Dino Toppmöller has left Lens less than three months after taking charge, in a decision that has caused strong surprise in Germany. The 45-year-old German coach joined on 16 June on a two-year contract, but his spell ended shortly after the club’s promising start to the season. Lens said the separation was agreed by both parties, with Toppmöller accepting a substantial reduction in the compensation due to him.

The results were mixed rather than disastrous. Lens began by beating Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the Trophée des Champions, then defeated Auxerre 5-2 in the opening Ligue 1 round. Two defeats, against Strasbourg and Lorient, and a draw with Le Mans followed, leaving the club 10th with four points after four league matches. Lens then opened its Champions League campaign with a 3-2 victory over Slavia Prague.

The main issue centred on Nelson Morgado, Toppmöller’s assistant since 2017. Lens decided to remove Morgado, reportedly after tensions with French members of the technical staff, but Toppmöller opposed the decision and viewed it as interference in his responsibilities. His loyalty to the assistant is understood to have contributed directly to his own departure. There were also reported disagreements with players over tactics and team selections. The German coach had been working without six regular starters who were injured or still recovering, but the club’s decision ended an appointment that had lasted only a few weeks.
