DR Congo's 2026 World Cup place faces FIFA scrutiny

DR Congo’s qualification is under scrutiny after FIFA allegedly overlooked goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi’s eligibility issue.

DR Congo’s place at the 2026 World Cup is under serious scrutiny after FIFA allegedly declined to act on an eligibility problem involving goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi. The controversy raises the possibility that the country could have been removed from the qualifying path despite securing its second appearance at the finals, following its 1974 debut.

DR Congo drew 1-1 with Nigeria before winning the African playoff final 4-3 on penalties, then defeated Jamaica 1-0 in the intercontinental playoff. Mpasi, who holds French and Congolese nationality, played in the qualifying campaign despite having represented France at youth level. The process to change his international affiliation was opened by the Congolese federation in 2021 but was apparently not completed.

Nigeria filed a challenge on November 28, 2025, alleging nationality and passport irregularities among several Congolese players. FIFA rejected the complaint on formal and timing grounds in a response sent on March 10, 2026, after the Nigerian federation followed up. During its examination, FIFA’s legal team identified Mpasi’s eligibility issue and warned of a possible protest over the Jamaica playoff.

Article 19 of FIFA’s disciplinary code provides for a forfeit and a minimum fine of 6,000 Swiss francs when an ineligible player appears after a protest. FIFA lawyers considered declaring DR Congo’s match against Nigeria forfeited, which would have sent Nigeria into the playoff against Jamaica, but no disciplinary decision was published. The case adds to criticism of FIFA, especially because previous comparable cases resulted in sanctions.
