DR Congo’s World Cup place questioned over Mpasi case

DR Congo’s 2026 World Cup place is under scrutiny after an investigation flagged Lionel Mpasi’s eligibility.

DR Congo’s participation at the 2026 World Cup is under question after an investigation alleged that goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi was not eligible to represent the country. The claim concerns his international affiliation and could affect the legitimacy of the Leopards’ qualification.

DR Congo reached the tournament after beating Nigeria in the African play-off final, then advanced to the round of 32 in North America. The Leopards finished third in Group K behind Portugal and Colombia before England eliminated them. They also took part in the intercontinental play-off against Jamaica.

Nigeria’s federation challenged the eligibility of several Congolese players after that play-off defeat, citing suspected nationality irregularities. Mpasi, 32, was among those questioned. The Le Havre goalkeeper holds French and Congolese citizenship, but allegedly did not complete the procedure required to change his international affiliation.

The challenge was initially rejected by FIFA, but was raised again in March 2026. FIFA’s legal officials then reportedly identified Mpasi as ineligible. Article 19 of the disciplinary code provides for a match to be awarded against a team that fields an ineligible player. Despite the case, FIFA allowed DR Congo to play Jamaica and later enter the World Cup, saying the Nigerian complaint was inadmissible, including because of missed deadlines.
