Erling Haaland punishes United in City's 10-man win

Manchester City secured three points at Old Trafford despite playing most of the match with ten men, while Manchester United failed to take advantage of their numerical superiority. Haaland’s decisive intervention also ended a game in which United created several clear openings but could not convert them.

City won 1-0 after Phil Foden was shown a straight red card in the 23rd minute for an offence against Bruno Fernandes. Haaland’s goal was initially disallowed, but the decision was overturned following a VAR review in the 63rd minute. City then protected their lead until the final whistle, with United unable to force an equaliser.

The result leaves City eighth with three points after one match, while United sit 17th without a point after one game. Both teams had recorded three wins in their previous five matches, but City’s other two results were a defeat and a draw, while United had also drawn once and lost once. The standings therefore give City an early advantage despite the difficult circumstances of the victory.

United struck the woodwork through Marcus Rashford’s free-kick before half-time and Kobbie Mainoo’s effort early in the second period. City nearly doubled their lead when Enzo Fernandez hit the post, while Harry Maguire headed wide late on as United’s pressure continued.
