Fiji seek new head coach ahead of 2027 World Cup

Fiji have launched the search for a head coach to guide the Flying Fijians through the build-up to the 2027 Rugby World Cup and beyond. The appointment follows the departure of Mick Byrne, who left by mutual agreement in April, leaving Senirusi Seruvakula in temporary charge.

Seruvakula has overseen the first three Nations Championship fixtures, all of which Fiji lost away from home. The ninth-ranked team will play at the World Cup in Australia in just over 13 months, in Pool C alongside Argentina, Spain and Canada. Fiji are viewed as capable of reaching the knockout stage, making the coaching decision central to their preparation.

The successful candidate will sign a contract running from 5 October 2026 to 31 December 2027. Fiji’s objectives include remaining competitive against leading nations, advancing beyond the World Cup pool stage, improving their 2027 world ranking and producing strong results in annual international competitions. The coach will also be expected to connect the national programme with Fiji’s development pathways and the Fijian Drua, who have played in Super Rugby since 2022.

Applicants must have a successful record in international rugby or elite competitions such as Super Rugby, the United Rugby Championship, Premiership or Top 14. Experience leading high-level multidisciplinary teams and preparing for international tournaments is also required. Applications close on 21 September, while the new coach’s first match could be against France in Lyon on 7 November in the Nations Championship.
