Germany held again by Greece in Nations League

Germany was held by Greece for the second time in a week and now trails the group leaders by three points.

Germany has lost further ground in its Nations League group after Greece denied it another victory and strengthened its position at the top. The result leaves Greece level with the Netherlands on eight points, while Germany sits three points behind the leading pair.

The teams drew 0-0 in Germany, a week after Greece had won their previous meeting 1-0. Greece threatened first when Fotis Ioannidis met a cross at the far post in the second minute, but Jonas Urbig kept out his header. Germany then controlled more of the ball, with Derry Scherant and Tom Bischof both testing goalkeeper Kostas Tzolakis. Jonathan Burkardt appeared to put Germany ahead in the 32nd minute after Scherant’s work on the left, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Germany continued to apply pressure after the interval without finding a way through. Greece remained dangerous on the break and created the more promising openings in the second half. Tzolakis protected the visitors’ goal, while Germany’s failure to convert its territorial dominance left it unable to close the gap on Greece and the Netherlands. The draw instead keeps Greece at the summit and extends Germany’s difficult run against the group leaders.
