Lucas Da Cunha sets high ambitions with France
Lucas Da Cunha says he must prove his France debut was no fluke while developing his risk-taking passing game.
Lucas Da Cunha knows his impressive start with France has created a new challenge: showing that his level can be sustained. The midfielder wants to establish himself both with the national team and at club level after making an immediate impact on the international stage.
He excelled on his debut against Belgium while operating as the holding midfielder, a position usually associated with Aurélien Tchouaméni. His technical ability, left-footed distribution and accurate long passes towards the attacking players stood out. His next appearance, against Italy, was more difficult and included a major error in a drawn match. Zinédine Zidane nevertheless treated the mistake as a collective responsibility.
Da Cunha has described his rise as unexpected and credited his family with encouraging him to keep working. He said the achievement felt like a major reward, but added that he feels enjoyment rather than pressure. That confidence now comes with the demand to confirm his performance was not a one-off.
The midfielder also recognises the limits of his game. He does not see physical duels or frequent ball recovery as his main strengths. Instead, he aims to influence matches through passing, technical quality and calculated risk-taking. His next objective is to keep displaying those qualities in France colours and for his club.
