Gianni Infantino faces opposition but keeps CAF backing

Gianni Infantino remains in position to seek another term as FIFA president, with the Confederation of African Football continuing to support him while opposition grows elsewhere in the football world. The development leaves the governing body facing a political contest ahead of its next presidential election in March 2027.

Infantino is currently the only declared candidate. His position has weakened since FIFA abandoned plans to create a commercial subsidiary that would have opened part of its business to outside investors. UEFA, Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation have criticised what they describe as unilateral decision-making, while South American football’s governing body has also voiced concern over repeated unilateral actions.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe has again defended Infantino, and the African confederation has issued public support for the FIFA leader. Argentina has also backed him, while several federations have openly opposed his leadership. In contrast, the French Football Federation has not joined that opposition.

Infantino’s eligibility is also being challenged by FairSquare, which argues that FIFA’s presidential term limits could prevent him from standing. The organisation has asked for him to be barred from the 2027 election. For now, however, Infantino remains the sole declared contender, supported by CAF as pressure builds around his administration.
