Ireland-Israel match prompts UEFA disciplinary probe
UEFA has appointed an ethics and disciplinary inspector after an alleged incident during Ireland’s 1-1 draw with Israel.
UEFA has opened a disciplinary investigation into alleged improper conduct during the Nations League meeting between Ireland and Israel. The European governing body appointed an inspector specialising in ethics and disciplinary matters after reviewing the official match reports. The inquiry concerns the behaviour of one or more Israeli players.
The match finished 1-1 on Sunday in Bačka Topola, Serbia. The allegation centres on an Israeli player who is suspected of spitting at Damien Doyle, Ireland’s performance director. Ireland coach Heimir Hallgrímsson acknowledged after the game that he had witnessed an incident, but said he would not discuss it because the matter would likely be handled by a disciplinary panel.
The fixture was the second meeting between the teams in a week, following Ireland’s 3-0 victory in Debrecen, Hungary. Both games took place amid political tension linked to Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. Irish players had threatened to boycott the first match in protest, while the pre-match media conference for the return fixture was shortened after questions from Israeli journalists.
The strained atmosphere was also visible during the matches. Ireland’s players lowered their heads while Israel’s anthem was played, and the captains did not exchange commemorative flags or shake hands. UEFA’s investigation will now determine whether disciplinary measures are warranted.
