Jeffrey de Lange takes charge as Marseille’s No 1

Jeffrey de Lange says Marseille’s new goalkeeper hierarchy has given him confidence after Geronimo Rulli’s exit.

Jeffrey de Lange has become Olympique Marseille’s established first-choice goalkeeper after Geronimo Rulli’s departure, leaving the club without a new senior goalkeeper signing during the summer window. The 28-year-old Dutchman is now expected to lead the position until the next transfer market, after spending his first two seasons at Marseille in a supporting role.

De Lange is the only goalkeeper in the current hierarchy with substantial senior experience, having played 70 professional matches. His deputy, Théo Vermot, has made only two appearances in France’s third tier with Orléans, while 22-year-old Jelle Van Neck has yet to play at this level. A problem for De Lange would therefore leave Marseille with limited top-flight experience behind him.

The goalkeeper said he is relieved that the market has closed, having also attracted interest from Twente before remaining in Marseille. He believes the promotion has increased his motivation without changing his preparation or daily habits, and he has backed both Vermot and Van Neck to contribute when required. Bruno Genesio has also endorsed the hierarchy, identifying De Lange as his No 1 and describing the squad’s three-competition schedule as an opportunity for the other goalkeepers. Marseille return to the Vélodrome against Paris FC after last weekend’s defeat at Monaco, in the club’s first match since the major transfer windows closed.
