Jose Mourinho backs Vinicius and criticises his treatment

Jose Mourinho has come to Vinicius Junior’s defence, arguing that the Real Madrid forward is being treated differently from other players in La Liga. The Portuguese coach said the pattern has become unacceptable and allows opponents to target the Brazilian more aggressively.

Mourinho’s intervention followed Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Espanyol Barcelona on Saturday. He said Vinicius is repeatedly subjected to forceful challenges because opponents believe they can continue without facing an immediate punishment.

The coach believes the problem is reinforced when disciplinary action arrives only after several fouls. In his view, Vinicius can improve his own control, but that does not excuse the challenge he singled out. Mourinho described a kick received by the forward as an act of aggression that warranted a red card.

His criticism focused on the treatment Vinicius receives rather than the result itself. Mourinho nevertheless said he retains confidence in Spanish refereeing, while making clear that he does not accept the current pattern of challenges against the Real Madrid No. 7.
