Julian Alaphilippe ends career, prompting Madiot tribute

Julian Alaphilippe has retired before his Tudor contract ended, drawing an emotional response from Groupama-FDJ boss Marc Madiot.

Julian Alaphilippe’s decision to retire has closed the career of one of cycling’s most recognisable figures, while leaving Marc Madiot mourning the loss of a rider who connected strongly with the public. Alaphilippe made the choice with one season still remaining on his contract with Tudor, ending his career shortly before the Vuelta began.

The announcement followed signs of fatigue after last month’s Tour de France, where the two-time world champion had suggested that his career could soon be over. His place in cycling history was secured in part by his 2019 Tour campaign: he finished fifth overall and wore the yellow jersey for 14 days.

Madiot, the head of Groupama-FDJ United, described the retirement as a major turning point for the sport. He said Alaphilippe had earned widespread affection through his openness, temperament and visible enthusiasm, qualities that made his performances meaningful to spectators beyond the result.

The French team boss also used Alaphilippe’s departure to defend a more human form of cycling. He contrasted riders who race through calculated data and technology with competitors willing to move beyond fixed plans. In that category, he placed Alaphilippe alongside Thibaut Pinot, Mathieu van der Poel, Wout van Aert and, at times, Tadej Pogacar.
