Kevin Diaz defends Lorenzi over Marseille's transfer squeeze

Kevin Diaz has defended Marseille sporting director Grégory Lorenzi as the club tries to reshape its squad before the transfer window closes. Diaz argued that the main obstacle is not Lorenzi’s contacts but the salaries attached to several players, which make potential exits difficult to complete.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was presented as the clearest example. The midfielder turned down a move to Newcastle, despite the English club offering Marseille a significant transfer opportunity and a route to cover his wages. Diaz said Hojbjerg’s choice leaves the club needing a destination that suits both the player and his financial expectations. A move to another league would therefore depend on that club being willing to match his current terms.

The comments also support coach Bruno Genesio’s decision to keep Hojbjerg involved. Genesio has maintained the midfielder’s place in the team while recognising the club’s desire to reduce its wage bill. Diaz said a coach’s responsibility is to use the strongest players available, not to act as the club’s financial administrator.

Hojbjerg has lost the captaincy under pressure from Marseille’s ownership, but he remains trusted by Genesio. The coach has also indicated that the squad could change significantly before the deadline, with several departures still possible. Diaz’s position is that even an experienced dealmaker would struggle to sell players whose wages and personal preferences sharply limit their options.
