Lille given the easiest Champions League draw by data

Data ranks Lille as the best-placed French club for the Champions League draw, while Lens faces one of the hardest.

Lille has emerged as the French club with the most favourable Champions League draw in a data-based comparison of all 36 teams. The finding overturns the first impression that Lille had received the most difficult assignment of France’s three representatives. Initial assessments suggested the draw could determine whether Lille reached the top 16 or fell outside the top 24.

The calculation measures the strength of each team’s opponents through an Elo-style ranking system, then adds those ratings together to produce a difficulty order. Lille sits 18th on the list of the hardest draws, which makes its schedule the most manageable among the French clubs. Paris Saint-Germain ranks 10th for draw difficulty and therefore faces a tougher set of opponents than Lille by this method.

Lens, despite being placed in pot four, is among the teams with the most demanding draws. Only Sabah and Manchester City share that position in the comparison. The ranking identifies Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Stuttgart as the clubs with the easiest schedules. It also suggests that Lens can still view its route as relatively favourable in sporting terms despite its low seeding, with the possibility of reaching at least the playoff round forming part of the initial assessment. The data, however, places Lens among the competition’s hardest-hit teams and Lille at the opposite end of the French ranking.
