Lionel Messi moves to take control of struggling CD Eldense

Lionel Messi is preparing to take control of CD Eldense, extending his move into football ownership while the Spanish club fights to avoid a damaging season in the second tier. The agreement in principle with the current owners would give the Inter Miami forward all of Eldense’s shares and make him its sole owner, subject to completion of the deal.

Eldense sit 20th in the 22-team division after collecting only two points from their first four matches. The club dismissed coach Claudio Barragán on Monday, leaving Messi’s prospective ownership arriving during a period of immediate sporting uncertainty. Eldense have never played above Spain’s second level.

The purchase would be Messi’s second club investment after his acquisition of fourth-tier Catalan side UE Cornellà in April. It points to a broader football-business strategy as the 39-year-old considers life after playing and following his announcement that he will retire from international football. Club ownership carries financial risks, but growing commercial income, broadcasting value and player and club image rights offer potential longer-term returns.

Messi’s profile could already bring commercial attention to Elda. Eleven brands are considering partnerships with Eldense, with six in talks, while some are linked to the Argentine. The club was founded in 1921 by Barcelona supporters and is based in Alicante province, less than five hours by road from Barcelona, where Messi plans to return after his playing career.
