Lionel Messi rejects conspiracy claims over Argentina’s run
Lionel Messi dismissed claims of outside help and blamed exhaustion for Argentina’s narrow World Cup final loss.
Lionel Messi has rejected claims that Argentina benefited from a conspiracy during its most recent World Cup campaign, saying the team’s progress came from effort rather than outside assistance. He addressed the allegations during his official farewell to the national team at Buenos Aires’ Monumental stadium, where he made his final appearance for Argentina against Benin.
Argentina won that farewell match 3-0 in front of more than 85,000 spectators. Messi, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, also reflected on a tournament in which Argentina defeated Cape Verde, Egypt and Switzerland before beating England 2-1 in the semi-final. Spain then won the final 1-0 after extra time, denying Argentina a fourth World Cup title after its victories in 1978, 1986 and 2022.
The campaign had drawn criticism over refereeing decisions, including claims that officials had tolerated overly physical Argentine play. Egypt’s coach went further by accusing FIFA of deliberately helping Argentina reach the final. Messi dismissed that explanation, pointing instead to the physical and emotional toll of the England match and saying the squad had reached the limit of its strength.
He credited every teammate who shared his international career, including those from teams that did not win major honours. Messi’s response framed Argentina’s tournament as the product of collective commitment and sacrifice, while closing a major chapter of his career with a defence of his teammates and the team’s sporting integrity.
