Luis Enrique gets PSG depth to intensify competition
PSG’s completed transfer window gives Luis Enrique more versatile options and stronger competition for places.
Paris Saint-Germain’s completed transfer window has given Luis Enrique the squad depth he wanted: a group in which starting places are less secure and replacements can genuinely challenge established players. The coach now has more ways to rotate without lowering the level of his team, while several players can cover different roles across the pitch.
Before these additions, PSG’s strongest selections were built largely around 12 or 13 regular choices for major matches. Luis Enrique has already shown a willingness to use the new options, making three substitutions at half-time in both the games at Rennes and Lille. That approach is easier when players leaving the field know their replacements may compete for a longer-term place.
Ferran Torres can operate as a false nine, on either wing or behind the striker. Maghnes Akliouche can play on both flanks and move into midfield, while Mika Godts is set to be assessed in several attacking positions. Lucas Digne gives the squad cover for Nuno Mendes, although his early appearances for PSG have been disappointing.
The added flexibility also changes the roles of existing players. Désiré Doué can feature more often in midfield, and Warren Zaïre-Emery can cover Achraf Hakimi without weakening the centre. Luis Enrique’s preferred tool is now available: continuous competition designed to prevent a comfortable hierarchy from taking hold.
