Malang Sarr named in Patrick Vieira’s Senegal squad

Malang Sarr has been named in Patrick Vieira’s first Senegal squad, opening the way for the defender to represent the country of his parents for the first time. The call-up ends a long period of uncertainty around his international future and reunites him with Vieira, who previously coached him at Nice.

Sarr, 27, is a centre-back who holds French and Senegalese citizenship. He previously represented France seven times, but has been waiting for an opportunity to switch his international allegiance to Senegal. He was preselected for the last World Cup squad before being left out of the final list, making his absence one of the most discussed decisions around the team.
