Malick Fofana leaves Lyon for Sunderland and the Premier League

Belgium winger Malick Fofana has left Lyon for Sunderland on a long-term deal after a late transfer twist, with the move easing pressure on the French club.

Malick Fofana has left Olympique Lyonnais for Sunderland, ending one of the most unsettled transfer sagas of the French club’s summer. The 21-year-old Belgian winger will begin his Premier League career with the Black Cats after Sunderland moved ahead of several interested clubs in the final stages of the window.

Fofana is expected to sign a five-year contract with an option for a further season. The transfer is estimated at €30 million plus bonuses. Lyon had initially reached an agreement with Sunderland for a fee of about €35 million before Crystal Palace and then Sunderland made late moves that changed the direction of the deal. Sunderland ultimately secured the player and presented him as the club’s fifth signing of the summer.

The winger had been cleared to travel for his medical before the transfer was completed. His arrival gives Sunderland a direct attacking player known for speed, dribbling and the ability to carry the ball forward. He joins a side coached by Frenchman Régis Le Bris, which finished seventh in the Premier League last season and will play in the Europa League during the 2026-27 campaign.

Fofana’s departure closes a two-and-a-half-year spell in Lyon. He joined the club in January 2024 and made 83 appearances, scoring 19 goals. His 2025-26 season was disrupted by a long-term injury, which also kept him out of the 2026 World Cup. Lyon had therefore considered keeping him for another season, particularly after another attacking prospect, Afonso Moreira, moved to Bayer Leverkusen.

The Belgian still opened the current campaign as an important part of the Lyon team. He played in all six matches contested by the club since the season began and scored twice. One goal came against Toulouse in the opening Ligue 1 fixture, while the other arrived in the Champions League qualifying play-off second leg against Fenerbahçe, a 2-1 defeat that ended Lyon’s hopes of reaching the competition proper.

That European elimination changed the financial pressure on Lyon. Victory over Fenerbahçe would have reduced the amount the club needed to raise through sales to about €25 million. After the defeat, the target rose to roughly €50 million. The club consequently had to consider offers for players it had previously preferred to retain, and Fofana was the most valuable saleable asset in the squad.

The winger had attracted interest from several clubs before Sunderland completed the move. Leipzig monitored him, while Hull City, Roma, Crystal Palace and Arsenal were also linked with the player during the final part of the window. Hull’s approach did not lead to a transfer, and Arsenal examined the possibility after Fofana was put forward. Crystal Palace also became involved, but Sunderland’s late agreement with Lyon proved decisive.

Lyon is now working to replace Fofana rather than leave a vacant position in its attack. The club has accelerated its pursuit of Keito Nakamura, the 26-year-old Japan international who plays for Reims. Nakamura has 29 caps and 11 goals for his country, and has scored 30 times with seven assists in 97 appearances for Reims since joining from Austria’s LASK Linz in 2023. For Sunderland, Fofana represents a major attacking addition and a route into European football. For Lyon, his sale provides immediate financial relief while forcing a significant change to the forward line.
