Marseille: Walid Acherchour alarmed by OM’s crisis
Walid Acherchour says Marseille’s finances, departures and injuries leave him fearful for the season ahead.
Marseille’s sporting and financial difficulties have prompted Walid Acherchour to express serious concern about the club’s prospects. The consultant believes the situation could become damaging for coach Bruno Genesio, whose squad remains short of reinforcements while the club seeks to raise funds through sales.
The warning follows Marseille’s defeat at Monaco’s Louis-II and comes as three players left the match injured. Geoffrey Kondogbia, Tochukwu Nadi and Angel Gomes all departed before the end, further reducing the options available to Genesio. Marseille have also made no summer signing so far and are still trying to balance their accounts.
The club has already lost several important starters, including Mason Greenwood, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Leonardo Balerdi, Geronimo Rulli and Facundo Medina. Other key players, such as Luis Henrique Paixao, Timothy Weah and Emerson, could also leave. Acherchour said that combination has left him fearful of a season that could deteriorate sharply.
He pointed to Nice’s difficulties last season as a possible warning, with the club finishing 18th in Ligue 1 before going through the relegation play-off. Marseille will also have the Europa League alongside the championship. Acherchour considers Genesio’s position especially difficult, despite the coach accepting the job while aware of the club’s financial problems, and said even an established coach might consider walking away in such circumstances.
