Mattéo Guendouzi faces official UEFA disciplinary case

UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Guendouzi, Greenwood and Fenerbahçe after the Lyon tie.

Mattéo Guendouzi is facing a UEFA disciplinary procedure after the incidents that followed Fenerbahçe’s Champions League play-off victory at Lyon. The case also concerns team-mate Mason Greenwood and the Turkish club, which will submit its defence to the European governing body. No sanction has yet been announced.

Fenerbahçe secured a place in the Champions League group stage by winning 2-1 away to Lyon. The match was followed by a confrontation near the tunnel, involving players and members of both coaching staffs. Guendouzi had already drawn attention during the warm-up and was accused of making provocative gestures towards the stands.

After the final whistle, the former Marseille midfielder made a Jul hand sign and shouted “Allez l’OM” in front of cameras. He said he had been responding to insults directed at his family from the Lyon stands, including comments about his mother and children. Guendouzi also argued that the gesture was a form of provocation rather than an offensive act, pointing to celebrations by Lyon players at Marseille in previous matches.

UEFA’s procedure now puts the conduct of Guendouzi, Greenwood and Fenerbahçe under review while the club prepares its arguments. The sporting outcome remains Fenerbahçe’s qualification, but the post-match events could bring separate disciplinary consequences for the players and their team.
