Max Verstappen says retirement was close despite 2030 deal

Max Verstappen will stay with Red Bull Racing until 2030, but his decision also reveals how seriously he considered ending his Formula 1 career. The Dutchman said he had been nearer to leaving the championship than moving to another team during recent months, with the demanding calendar and incoming regulation changes among the factors behind his doubts.

The four-time world champion no longer feels he has anything to prove in Formula 1. Winning his first title fulfilled his major ambitions, and he now says he competes for his own satisfaction, Red Bull and its supporters rather than to secure a place in history. His decision to continue is therefore tied to his enjoyment of driving, not a need to add validation to his career.

Red Bull has also given Verstappen room to pursue other forms of motor racing. He took part in the Nürburgring 24 Hours in May and has identified the 24 Hours of Le Mans and Daytona as races he would like to contest. That flexibility helped make the long-term agreement possible while allowing him to explore endurance racing.

Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies has described the renewal as major news for the team and the wider sport. Verstappen has taken four podiums in his last five races, increasing the pressure on Red Bull to produce a car capable of returning him to the top consistently.
