Gary Neville points to rising tensions at Manchester United
Gary Neville says Lisandro Martinez and Amad Diallo’s public messages have exposed growing unrest at Manchester United.
Manchester United are facing growing unrest inside the squad after Gary Neville identified a public dispute involving Lisandro Martinez and Amad Diallo. The former captain believes the tension could either deepen the club’s problems or provide the spark needed to change its difficult run.
Martinez spoke out after United’s Champions League defeat by Atletico Madrid, calling for greater investment and questioning sporting director Jason Wilcox over the club’s lack of ambition in the transfer market. Diallo then posted a photograph from Old Trafford on Snapchat with a message expressing shame and disbelief, without explaining what had prompted it.
Neville interpreted the post as a possible response to Martinez and said the two players appeared to be taking aim at each other. He also suggested that Martinez’s intervention might ultimately benefit the squad by forcing a reaction from a group in need of a turning point.
That view differs from Wayne Rooney’s assessment. Rooney considered Martinez’s comments disrespectful to his teammates because they cast doubt on their ability to win trophies. United will try to end the poor sequence when they face Como in Europe on Wednesday.
