Médina Fall-Renaissance final unsettles Thiès residents

Residents near Maniang Soumaré stadium took precautions as security concerns overshadowed the Navétanes final.

The Navétanes final between ASC Médina Fall and ASC Renaissance left residents around Thiès’ Maniang Soumaré stadium more concerned about security than celebration. People living in the Carrière and Dixième neighbourhoods altered their routines before the night match, reflecting fears linked to previous fixtures in the Zone Nord.

Several shops shut before the game ended, while Jakarta riders and delivery workers kept their motorcycles off the streets. Some families stayed indoors, and vehicle owners moved cars away from the main routes leading to the stadium. The area therefore carried an atmosphere of caution rather than the usual excitement associated with a final.

Residents said earlier matches involving some Zone Nord teams had been accompanied by violence, street theft, assaults and other disturbances. They fear that individuals unrelated to the competition can use the crowds and confusion to target passers-by or damage property, with the period after the final whistle viewed as particularly sensitive.

Security forces were present, but people living nearby called for a stronger preventive operation, especially when supporters leave the stadium. They urged administrative and security authorities to protect residents and businesses, arguing that a Navétanes final should not force shops to close, transport workers to stop operating or families to remain behind closed doors.
