Mike Dean sparks scrutiny after revealing Premier League games
Retired referee Mike Dean has drawn criticism after describing Premier League challenges he used to pass time during matches.
Mike Dean has prompted fresh questions about refereeing standards after describing personal challenges he used during some Premier League matches. The former official said the games were intended as jokes, but his comments have led to concern over the credibility of decisions made during his career.
Dean, 58, retired in 2022 after more than 500 top-level matches, two decades in the Premier League and several finals. Speaking on Jamie Vardy’s podcast, he said he sometimes tried to see how long he could go without blowing his whistle. On some occasions, he claimed, that lasted 20 or 25 minutes. He stressed that these incidents happened before the introduction of VAR.
He also recalled standing in the centre circle to test how long he could remain there before having to leave, saying he once lasted 15 minutes. Mark Halsey, another former Premier League referee, said he had never heard of such behaviour and questioned whether it could undermine confidence in officials generally. Halsey argued that remaining five minutes without awarding a free-kick would already be difficult, let alone 20. Dean’s remarks have also prompted supporters to wonder whether their teams were affected by such decisions in the past.
