OM face transfer concern as Rothen criticises McCourt

Marseille could finish the summer without a signing, prompting Jérôme Rothen to blame owner Frank McCourt.

Marseille’s transfer planning has become a source of concern after the club indicated it could reach the end of the window without adding a player. Several departures also remain to be completed, leaving the squad’s final shape uncertain ahead of the deadline.

The situation contrasts with an encouraging start in Ligue 1. OM opened the campaign by beating Strasbourg 4-0, but that result has not eased concerns about recruitment. Sporting director Grégory Lorenzi has acknowledged that Marseille might make no signing before the market closes.

Jérôme Rothen has described that possibility as a serious problem. The former Paris Saint-Germain player said the early victory could create a misleading sense of security and argued that failing to recruit would be a damaging outcome for the club. His criticism focused more on owner Frank McCourt than on Lorenzi, who only recently took charge of sporting affairs.

Rothen argued that McCourt had previously invested heavily but was no longer putting money into the club, leaving Marseille in difficulty. OM still have until 19:59 on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, to register a new player and resolve the remaining exits. Until then, the opening win offers a positive form marker, but the squad remains under scrutiny.
