Portugal's No. 7 Goes to Rafael Leao in UEFA Nations League Drama

Rafael Leao has inherited Portugal’s No. 7 for the Denmark match after Cristiano Ronaldo left camp, with UEFA rules driving the rapid change.

Rafael Leao will wear Portugal’s No. 7 in the UEFA Nations League match against Denmark in Copenhagen, taking over the shirt most closely associated with Cristiano Ronaldo. The change follows Ronaldo’s abrupt departure from the national-team camp after a dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus, but it is not presented as a deliberate gesture against the veteran forward.

The number was confirmed on the match sheet for the third day of the Nations League. Leao, who plays for Milan, had previously worn No. 15 and No. 17 for Portugal. He now moves into the shirt Ronaldo had used with the national team since the 2007-08 season, placing the AC Milan attacker at the centre of attention before a difficult away fixture.

Portugal’s rapid reassignment of the number is explained by the competition regulations. Article 37 of the Nations League rules requires teams to allocate shirt numbers from 1 to 23 for matches in the league phase, the quarter-finals and the play-offs. The numbering range expands to 1 to 26 for the final tournament. If No. 1 is included, it must be worn by a goalkeeper.

That requirement leaves little room for a national team to keep a vacant number when a player withdraws from a squad. With Ronaldo no longer available for the trip to Denmark, Portugal had to submit a complete numbered match squad. Leao therefore received No. 7 as part of the normal administrative process, even though the timing has given the decision a highly charged meaning in Portugal.

The switch also has recent precedents. Ronaldo missed the March 2026 international window through injury, and Goncalo Guedes wore No. 7 in Portugal’s friendly matches against Mexico and the United States. Carlos Forbs used the number during his only Portugal appearance, against Armenia in November 2025, when Ronaldo was unavailable after receiving a red card in Ireland. The shirt has therefore not been permanently reserved in the squad list.

The circumstances surrounding Ronaldo’s exit have made this reassignment more prominent than those earlier examples. The 41-year-old left the team hotel in Copenhagen during the night in his private jet after being involved in a heated disagreement with Jesus. The conflict followed his move to the substitutes’ bench, a decision that reportedly intensified tensions between the player and the coach.

Portugal now faces the Denmark match without its most recognisable international figure and with uncertainty over his immediate future. A suspension of between one and six months has been raised under the Portuguese Football Federation’s disciplinary code for leaving the camp without justification. Ronaldo is also preparing a public statement that could formally confirm an irreversible retirement from international football, although that announcement has not yet been made.

For Leao, the No. 7 brings opportunity as well as scrutiny. He is not the first Portugal player to wear it in Ronaldo’s absence, but he is the one to inherit it during the most disruptive episode surrounding the shirt. The immediate facts are clear: Portugal must comply with the Nations League numbering rules, Leao will carry the number in Copenhagen, and Ronaldo’s status with the national side remains unsettled beyond this match.
