Portugal secure Nations League quarter-final place
Portugal stay top of their Nations League group after beating Norway 2-1 and confirming their place in the quarter-finals.
Portugal have confirmed their qualification for the Nations League quarter-finals while remaining at the top of their group. Jorge Jesus’s team achieved that objective by defeating Norway 2-1 at the Estádio do Dragão in Porto, a result that gives them a place among the competition’s final eight after the fourth round of group matches.
Norway struck first in the 36th minute. Martin Ødegaard’s long free-kick reached Kristoffer Ajer, who finished with a volley to put the visitors ahead. Portugal’s response was immediate. Two minutes later, João Cancelo levelled the match with a half-volley from the edge of the area after Nuno Mendes had taken the throw-in that began the move. The equaliser ensured the hosts went into the interval on level terms after a contest that had begun with both teams creating opportunities.
Portugal eventually found the decisive goal in the 79th minute. Vitinha opened the play towards the right, João Félix turned the ball back into the danger area, and Gonçalo Ramos finished from close range to complete the turnaround. Norway had threatened earlier in the second half through Erling Haaland, whose attempt in the 61st minute went wide after Patrick Berg supplied the ball. The Manchester City forward was replaced six minutes later, leaving the pitch while limping.
The hosts had to protect their advantage with 10 players after Francisco Conceição received a second yellow card and was sent off in the 86th minute. Norway could not take advantage before the final whistle. Portugal therefore extended their lead at the summit through a narrow victory, and the points have also removed any uncertainty over their progress to the knockout stage.
