Rennes explain Boulaye Dia choice after final signing

Rennes say Boulaye Dia adds a different attacking profile after joining from Lazio as their ninth and final summer recruit.

Rennes have completed their summer recruitment with Boulaye Dia, explaining the Senegal international’s selection as a way to add a different option to the attack. The 29-year-old centre-forward arrives from Lazio after the departure of Breel Embolo, with the club having also considered Odsonne Édouard.

Dia joins on a paid loan costing €2 million, with Rennes holding a €7 million purchase option. His strength, pressing work and ability to operate in different attacking roles were key factors in the decision. The club sees him as complementary to Estéban Lepaul, while his arrival could allow Eliezer Mayenda to move to a wider position.

The former Reims striker returns to Ligue 1 five years after leaving France and brings four seasons of experience in Italy. His previous clubs include Villarreal and Salernitana, and he has played in the Champions League with Villarreal. He is also eligible for Senegal and France and is currently contracted to Lazio.

At Rennes, Dia can lead the line alone, compete with Lepaul for the central role or play alongside him in the alternative systems being considered by coach Franck Haise. The move gives Rennes a forward with a different profile while completing their ninth signing of the summer window.
