Senegal U23 return with 3-1 friendly win over Gambia

Senegal U23 marked their return after three years away with a 3-1 friendly victory over Gambia.

Senegal’s U23 team has resumed international activity after three years without a match. The return gives coach Serigne Saliou Dia’s side a winning start, with another friendly against Gambia scheduled for October 5 at the Léopold Sédar Senghor Stadium.

Senegal defeated Gambia 3-1 in their first appearance since 2023. Antoine Junior Wenck opened the scoring in the second minute, turning in a corner before El Hadj Abdoulaye Dieng added a second with a header in the 32nd minute. Ousseynou Fall Seck delivered the set piece for the second goal.

Wenck struck again eight minutes after half-time, scoring from another corner to complete his double. The midfielder, who plays for Portuguese club Rio Ave, was central to Senegal’s attacking display. Francis Gomez pulled one goal back for Gambia in the 60th minute, but Senegal kept their advantage through the remainder of the match.

The result re-establishes the Senegal U23 team after its long interruption and gives the squad a positive platform before the return fixture. The two sides will meet again at the same stadium on October 5, with Senegal seeking another useful test under Dia.
