Richarlison left at Tottenham after Vasco move fails

Richarlison is set to remain with Tottenham Hotspur until at least January after his proposed move to Vasco da Gama collapsed. He is outside Tottenham’s 25-man Premier League squad and therefore cannot play in the competition during the first half of the season.

The 29-year-old had also failed to complete a return to former club Everton before England’s transfer deadline on September 1. Tottenham had told him before the deadline that he was not part of the first-team plans. He started the club’s league opener against Brentford on August 22, but was later left out of the squad.

Vasco, the Brazilian club Richarlison supported as a child, reached an agreement with Tottenham over the financial terms of a permanent transfer. The deal still fell through because the player did not agree personal conditions. Brazil’s transfer window has now closed, while the windows in Turkey and Saudi Arabia have also shut. Tottenham had already used its allowance of six loans for players based outside England, leaving few alternatives.

Coach Roberto De Zerbi said Richarlison had made his own decisions after being omitted, while adding that the club, player and agent all knew what had happened. Richarlison also explored ending the final nine months of his Tottenham contract, but no agreement was reached.
