Samuel Eto’o defends Gianni Infantino amid FIFA criticism

Samuel Eto’o has come to Gianni Infantino’s defence as the FIFA president faces sustained criticism over controversial proposals and approaches the next election for the governing body’s leadership. The president of the Cameroon Football Federation said the timing of the attacks was connected to the forthcoming vote, making clear that he continues to support Infantino.

Speaking to CNN, Eto’o argued that Infantino’s record should be recognised, particularly in Africa. He credited the FIFA president with helping the continent and its federations develop more quickly, and said his overall contribution had changed football. The former Barcelona striker also urged continued support for Infantino because of what he has achieved during his tenure.

FIFA’s proposal to sell part of the World Cup’s commercial rights to private investors was abandoned after strong opposition. Eto’o nevertheless believes the idea could return if Infantino wins re-election next year. He considers the proposal potentially valuable for Africa because it could help rebalance influence in football, while giving the continent a better chance of retaining its talent instead of seeing players represent other countries.

Eto’o’s position contrasts with the criticism directed at Infantino in recent weeks and gives the FIFA president backing from one of Africa’s most prominent football figures as the election approaches.
